Piranhas - Myth and reality of the feared predators - mini documentary

Piranhas are among the best-known, but also most misunderstood fish in the world. In films and horror stories, they are regarded as bloodthirsty killers that destroy all living flesh in seconds. But the reality is far less dramatic. These freshwater fish, which are native to the rivers and lakes of South America, play an important role in their ecosystem - even if their sharp teeth deserve respect.
There are around 30 to 60 species of piranha, most of which are found in the tropical waters of the Amazon basin. The best-known species is the red piranha, recognisable by its silvery body and reddish belly colouring. Piranhas can reach a size of 15 to 50 cm, depending on the species. Their trademark is their razor-sharp, triangular teeth, which can even penetrate hard material. However, these are not only suitable for hunting, but also for crushing plants or carrion.
Contrary to myth, piranhas are not pure carnivores. They have an omnivorous diet: In addition to fish, insects or small vertebrates, they also eat algae, seeds and fruit. The infamous ‘feeding frenzy’ rarely occurs, usually only in extreme situations such as drought, when food is scarce and they are trapped in confined waters. Even then, they tend to attack sick or injured animals.
Piranhas often live in shoals, which serves less to hunt than to protect them from predators such as caimans or dolphins. They are flexible in their search for food: some species hunt alone, others co-operate. Their role as ‘health police’ is crucial: by eating carrion, they prevent the spread of diseases in their habitats.
During the spawning season, females lay thousands of eggs in aquatic plants, which are guarded by males. The fry hatch after a few days and grow quickly. However, their survival is endangered: Habitat loss due to pollution and overfishing (for food or for aquariums) threaten many populations. In some regions, piranhas have already disappeared.
Attacks on humans are extremely rare and are usually due to provocation. In murky water, bites can occur when fishing or entering their territory, but are rarely fatal. Local communities traditionally use piranhas as a source of protein and make tools or jewellery from their teeth. What do you think of these beautiful animals? I would really appreciate a like and a subscription.

I am constantly creating videos about mythical creatures and general facts about animals.
