Point Durban

The Point is a historic and evolving waterfront neighborhood in Durban, known for its strategic location near the entrance to Durban Harbour and its proximity to the Indian Ocean. It’s been a focal point for redevelopment in recent years, blending old maritime grit with new urban energy.

The area sits at the southeastern tip of central Durban, where the harbor meets the sea. It’s got a mix of old warehouses, modern apartments, and commercial spots, with the uShaka Marine World being a major draw—think aquariums, water parks, and restaurants that pull in both locals and tourists. The Point Waterfront stretches along the harbor channel, offering views of passing ships and the city skyline. It’s also got a promenade that’s good for a walk or jog, though it’s less flashy than Durban’s Golden Mile further north.

Historically, the Point was rough around the edges—a hub for sailors, traders, and the less glamorous side of port life. Over the last couple of decades, though, there’s been a push to clean it up and make it a centerpiece for tourism and investment. Projects like the Durban Point Development have brought in high-rise residential towers, hotels, and retail spaces. Still, it’s not all polished—some pockets feel neglected, and crime can be a concern, like in many urban parts of Durban.
