Edom is Christianity

The biblical Edomites are descendants of Esau, Jacob's twin brother. The Torah narrative presents Esau as worldly, impulsive, and more concerned with the physical and immediate (selling his birthright for lentils). This sets the stage for Edom's symbolic role.

✡️ Throughout the Hebrew Bible, Edom is often depicted as an adversary to Israel. They refused passage during the Exodus, rejoiced at the destruction of Jerusalem, and were often involved in conflict with the Israelites.

✡️ Kabbalah takes the historical Edom and transforms it into a symbol for deeper spiritual realities (magical mysticism). Edom ceases to be just a nation and becomes an archetype of negativity.

✡️ Edom is often associated with the realm of Klipot (shells or husks), representing the outer layers of creation, the material world, and the forces that obscure and veil the divine light. Just as Esau was focused on the physical (hunger for lentils), Edom symbolizes the over-emphasis on the material and the forgetfulness of the spiritual.

✡️ Edom represents the unrefined ego, driven by self-interest, desire, and immediate gratification. It's the part of us that is resistant to spiritual growth, clinging to the superficial and external. Esau's impulsivity and lack of foresight are seen as manifestations of this egoic nature.

Edom symbolizes the external forces and challenges that obstruct the path to spiritual enlightenment. These can be internal distractions (negative thoughts, temptations) or external obstacles (oppression, materialism in society). It is the "Other Side" (Sitra Achra) that actively opposes holiness (Kedushah).

✡️ Edom is associated with spiritual impurity (Tumah) and the lack of holiness (Kedushah). It's seen as the realm where divine energy is most veiled and distorted. This isn't to say Edom is inherently evil, but rather that it represents the absence or distortion of divine qualities.

✡️ In the Sephirot (divine emanations), Edom is often linked to the Sephirah of Gevurah (Severity, Judgment, Divine Justice, Limitation). However, it's not Gevurah itself in its balanced and constructive form, but rather Gevurah in its "fallen" or unbalanced state. Edom represents unmitigated judgment, severity without mercy, and limitation that constricts rather than refines. It is the excessive or misapplied force of Gevurah.
