SpaceX's Starship spacecraft exploded minutes after lifting off, dooming an attempt to deploy mock satellites in the second consecutive failure this year for Elon Musk's Mars rocket program. The 123-meter rocket blasted off from Texas a little before sunset. SpaceX caught the first-stage booster back at the pad with giant mechanical arms, but engines on the spacecraft on top started shutting down as it streaked eastward for what was supposed to be a controlled entry over the Indian Ocean, half a world away. Contact was lost with the spacecraft as it went into an out-of-control spin. The failure comes just more than a month after the company's seventh Starship flight also ended in an explosive failure. The back-to-back mishaps occurred in early mission phases that SpaceX has easily surpassed previously, indicating serious setbacks for a program Musk has sought to speed up this year. SpaceX confirmed that the Starship blew up in flight, calling it a "rapid unscheduled disassembly."
