The evening was hosted by Sarina Singh and the Rights and Freedoms Institute.

Bill C-16 was introduced to Canadian legislature in 2017, presenting the implications and effects of adding gender identity and gender expression into Canadian hate-speech law. Sarina Singh hosted the largest address on this topic of its time in Canadian parlance to discuss the issue of gender pronouns and compelled speech which received national and international attention when the infamous videos of Dr. Jordan Peterson were released. In them, Dr. Jordan Peterson raised concerns of Government overreach and compelled speech with regards to the nature of how this bill was worded.

Bill C-16 has since been passed, but what have its real-world effects been in the year since its passing? Distinguished panelists discuss the application of this new law, what the science says about sex differences, activism on university campuses and how they influence journalism and freedom of speech.
