Spring Garden

We had some beautiful weather this past week and were able to get a head start on our spring garden. I’ve always had a hard time with spring crops, usually planting them too late and most of the brassicas like broccoli and cabbage would bolt rather than forming heads. This year I’m starting as early as possible to see if I’m successful!

This soil blocker I’m using was a game changer for gardening. I used to start my seeds in those plastic seeds trays which disintegrate over time, and usually disturb the plant roots when trying to take them out. This soil blocker comes in 3 size blocks, of which I use the middle size most frequently. I love it because once the plants are ready you can just stick them right in the ground.

In addition to spring crops like peas, brassicas, and onions, I also start my peppers indoors early since they take a long time to mature. However, these will not go outside until after the risk of frost. We are in USDA zone 6a, so that’s typically about mid-May.

We’ve only be gardening for a couple years so a lot of what we do is trial and error, and each year we are finding ways to improve. We hope to be a resource for those looking to start growing their own food and want to learn how!
