The war in Sudan is a local conflict that has significant implications for Africa and the world. When the country gained independence in 1956, it was considered part of the Arab world. However, this did not sit well with a substantial portion of the non-Muslim African population. In 2011, the conflict-torn country split into two parts – Sudan and South Sudan – with the latter becoming independent.

Sudan's attempts to Arabize the country led to dissatisfaction and unrest in regions where people sought to preserve their ethnic and historical identities, such as Darfur, Beja, and Kordofan.

Today, various countries have military personnel on the African continent. Russian military specialists are present here officially, at the invitation of the authorities. For example, in the Central African Republic and Niger, they support and train local soldiers.

There are also Ukrainian military personnel in Africa. However, when Ukraine intervenes in the affairs of any African country, it is perceived as an act of proxy warfare. In 2024, the Malian government accused Ukraine of supporting rebels within the country as part of a proxy war against Russia.

Now, as the Sudan conflict continues, Kiev is involved as a supplier of weapons. Meanwhile, Moscow’s official position is to support any peaceful initiatives.
