We have three dogs. One of them, Rufus, is obsessed with letters, not that anyone writes to him, but he growls and barks when letters are delivered, pulls protruding ones from the letterbox and if left alone with them will tear them up. Something had to be done. The best solution would be a metal box securely screwed to the door but that would not work with our Composite door. So the only option was a cloth bag to catch the letters secured to the door with velcro.
The item arrived packed in just a clear plastic bag with no additional packaging and no instructions (not that they are needed). Inside was the folded letter catcher, made from a medium-weight felt type material and two brass hooks.
Once unfolded the catcher is 40 x 48 x 6 cm in size and weighs just 250g. It has a zipped access flap on the top and another on the front just above the clear viewing panel showing the delivered mail. On the rear, it has a 35 x 10 cm opening with velcro strips top and bottom to be secured around the letter box.
Fitting is easy enough, just remove the backing from the velcro strips and push them firmly in place around the letterbox. If your door is wood you can make it much more secure by using the supplied hooks with the eye holes on either side of the catcher. The only problem is that some doors, such as mine, have decorative beading which can get in the way, but you should be able to work around this.
In use, it works well enough and the viewing window means you can see at a glance if mail has been delivered. If you do not use the hooks then of course the catcher bag is supported just by the velcro and this may give way over time and of course, may fail to support heavy packages. Also, there is the grave risk that oversized or cardboard envelopes may push the bag off the door when inserted too hard.
Amazon sells many letter catchers similar to this one and most are similarly priced at around £20 and I do not know if they are better than this one. I have to say I am happy with this one and for the price I paid it was a good buy
