Demystifying ISF: When to File for Oil Lamps and Accessories
License To Import // 323-578-6432 // [email protected] // www.licensetoimport.com
In this episode of License to Import, we discuss the importance of filing an Importer Security Filing (ISF) for oil lamps and accessories. We explain that an ISF is a mandatory document that enhances cargo security and provides advance information to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) about incoming shipments. We outline the general rule that the ISF must be filed at least 24 hours before the goods are loaded onto the vessel destined for the United States, with exceptions for truck or rail shipments and foreign cargo remaining onboard (FROB) shipments. We emphasize the benefits of working with a licensed customs broker to ensure accurate and timely ISF filings, as well as to handle other necessary paperwork and stay updated on customs regulations. We also cover the importance of customs bonds, the two types of bonds available, and the potential consequences of not filing the ISF or failing to comply with customs regulations. Overall, our goal is to provide valuable insights to help importers navigate the world of customs brokerage and international trade.

00:17 - ISF Filing Requirements: Importer Security Filing (ISF) for oil lamps and accessories must be submitted at least 24 hours before loading onto a vessel bound for the U.S., or 24 hours prior to crossing the U.S. border for truck or rail shipments. For foreign cargo remaining onboard (FROB), it must be filed within 48 hours after the ship departs from the last foreign port.
01:40 - Customs Bonds: Importers are required to obtain customs bonds, which are financial guarantees for the payment of duties, taxes, and compliance with customs regulations. There are two types of bonds: single entry bonds for individual transactions and continuous bonds for multiple shipments over a year.
02:22 - Consequences of Non-compliance: Failing to file the ISF accurately or on time can lead to penalties, shipment holds, and additional costs. It is essential for importers to stay informed about ISF requirements and work with customs brokers to ensure compliance and maintain accurate records.
