‘Are You Out of Your Mind?’ Rep. Donalds Exposes Dem Mayors

D.C. (Dist. of Criminals), March 6, 2025 — Florida Rep. Byron Donalds unleashed a fiery rebuke on Democratic mayors during Wednesday’s House Oversight Committee hearing, exposing their failure to account for how much taxpayer money has been spent on illegal immigration in their cities.

Democratic mayors Mike Johnston (Denver), Brandon Johnson (Chicago), Eric Adams (New York City), and Michelle Wu (Boston) testified before the committee, where Donalds pressed each of them for a specific number on how much they had spent to support illegal immigrants. While Johnston and Adams provided estimates of $79 million and $6.9 billion respectively, Johnson and Wu struggled to answer, prompting Donalds’ blunt criticism of their leadership.

“That’s why you’re a failing mayor,” Donalds told Chicago Mayor Johnson, after he repeatedly dodged providing a hard number.

When Boston Mayor Michelle Wu claimed her city doesn’t “ask about immigration status” when spending public funds, Donalds didn’t hold back:

“Are you out of your mind?” Donalds fired back.

He then turned to the residents of Boston, warning them of their mayor’s lack of accountability:

“To the city of Boston, just understand that your mayor does not care how much of your resources she has spent on people who are not citizens of the city of Boston.”

The hearing also revealed that Wu and Johnson could not explicitly say whether they would turn over criminal illegal immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Meanwhile, Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed lawsuits against Chicago, Cook County, and New York for their sanctuary city policies, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE agents.
