Family farm reveals toll of Rachel Reeves's 'unjust' changes at the Budget
Farmers have been hit by inheritance tax changes, national insurance hikes and minimum wage changes.

“I think people forget we’re an island. We’ve come out of Europe and I think part of coming out of Europe was to be more self-sufficient. This was a great opportunity to support British farming. If a world crisis happens, we could isolate ourselves a little bit from it by being more self-sufficient and it does upset me that we haven’t really looked to support farmers better. I can understand why they might feel a bit brow-beaten by all of this coming down the line.”

He added: “Farmers don’t think about sitting on land as a cash reserve. They don’t want to suddenly cash in one day. They want to give the same opportunity to the next generation as they were given from their parents.

"We’re just custodians of the land. We like looking after it for the benefit of everybody who can see it and walk across it. We want to be able to produce good quality food for our nation and it would be nice to have a bit of support from the Government to recognise that sentiment that farmers have.”

Farms Not Factories is a non-governmental organisation that has been campaigning against pig factories for over 15 years. *Factory pig farms can be defined as indoor facilities in which overcrowding and lack of bedding means that the animals suffer stress and disease, are prone to tail biting and have to be routinely given antibiotics.

Buying cheap pork from factory farms carries hidden costs that many people are unaware of:

The globalisation of our livestock system undermines our local small scale, high welfare pig farmers and results in the loss of food sovereignty.
Animals are abused through confinement, overcrowding, illegal tail docking, illegal lack of bedding, neglect and denial of natural behaviours.
Public health is threatened through antibiotic overuse which leads to antibiotic-resistant diseases that can pass from pigs to humans.
Factory pig farms produce waste that pollutes the air, sickening local residents, and contaminates rivers, lakes and the sea, causing fish kills and destruction of aquatic wildlife.
Rainforest and Cerrado habitats in S.America are destroyed in order to grow genetically modified soya for pig feed – which is then shipped 8,000 miles to factory farms in Europe.

Factory farming of any species is wrong. Our focus on the pig industry is only designed to bring light onto an issue about which there is currently insufficient public awareness.
