What Martin Luther Got Right—and Wrong—About the Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper is one of the most misunderstood doctrines in church history. While nearly all Christians recognize its significance, the interpretation and application of this ordinance have varied widely. Roman Catholics refer to it as the Eucharist, believing in the doctrine of transubstantiation, where the bread and wine literally become the body and blood of Christ. Protestants, including Martin Luther, rejected this idea, but Luther’s alternative—consubstantiation—did not go far enough in returning to a biblical understanding. As a Baptist, I use the term the Lord’s Supper rather than Eucharist because of the weight of tradition and doctrinal implications attached to the latter. This article will explore what Luther got right, what he got wrong, and what Scripture actually teaches about the Lord’s Supper.
