Police are investigating after a driver headed the wrong way down the Gardiner Expressway, drove into a construction site and fell into a hole causing the vehicle to flip and land on its roof.

Toronto police said a hazard was initially reported around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday on the Gardiner, between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue, when a vehicle was seen travelling westbound in the eastbound side of the expressway.

Duty Insp. Brian Maslowski told reporters a grey Honda drove through a closed off construction site, smashed through the gate, and went through a large opening of the raised portion of the expressway.

Global's Catherine McDonald reports.
