Essie Williams Dunbar (1885–1962) was an American woman famously known for being mistakenly bur!ed @live in 1915. After suffering what was believed to be a fatal epileptic attack, she was declared de@d by a doctor and her funeral was held the following day. Her body was placed in a coffin and lowered into the ground, but when her sister, who had traveled from out of town, arrived late and wanted to see Essie one last time, the coffin was dug up and opened. To everyone’s shock, Essie sat up, very much alive and smiled. Despite the terrifying experience, she lived for 47 more years until her actual death in 1962. Her story became one of the most well-known real-life cases of premature burial.
