Houston, TX - Officers got into a shootout with a man they said was on an early-morning crime spree, with the suspect being shot and taken to a hospital.

Houston police said the exchange of gunfire happened in northwest Harris County, but the crime spree started earlier in west Houston. During a news conference Sunday morning, HPD Assistant Chief J. Skelton said at around 3 a.m., the man robbed three women of the car they were in along Richmond Avenue west of Fondren. Then, 12 minutes later, Skelton said he robbed a convenience store about a mile away, taking off with several hundred dollars.

Officers from the Midwest and Northwest patrol started looking for the suspect when one of the officers spotted the vehicle he was in. They started to follow him and saw him pull into an apartment complex near Easton Commons Drive near the intersection of Highway 6 and Huffmeister in northwest Harris County.

"As the officers converged the suspect exited the stolen vehicle ran through the courtyard and immediately started to fire at the officers who were pursuing, officers returned fire striking the suspect and taking him into custody," Skelton said.

No officers were hurt in the shooting. The suspect was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. It's unclear why the man went to the apartment complex.

In all, Skelton said five officers were involved, ranging in experience from six months to three years. They will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard in shootings that involve officers. Because the shooting was in Harris County, the sheriff's office will be involved. There will also be an internal HPD investigation.

This is the second straight day an officer has gotten into a shootout with a suspect. On Saturday, officers exchanged gunfire with two teens who were accused of trespassing at a southeast Houston apartment complex. In that case, one teen was injured in the shooting and the other was injured by broken glass.
