Rosemary Gibson

Rosemary Gibson is the author of China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America’s Dependence on China for Medicine.

Ms. Gibson has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, and the Senate Small Business Committee on the national security threats posed by the centralization of the global supply chain for essential medicines and risk mitigation measures.

Ms. Gibson is a member of the Defense Health Board healthcare delivery subcommittee. The American Pharmacists Association Foundation recognized her with its 2019 Pinnacle Award for career achievement.

Earlier in her career at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Rosemary developed its decade-long national strategy to integrate palliative care into the nation’s acute care hospitals. At the start, only a handful of hospitals had a palliative care program. Today, nearly 2,000 acute care hospitals report having one. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

While at the Foundation, she led national quality improvement and patient safety initiatives and funded the first rapid response systems in U.S. hospitals, which have been credited with saving lives. She received the South Carolina Hospital Association’s Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Award.

Ms. Gibson has delivered grand rounds and patient safety presentations at hundreds of hospitals and has been a keynote speaker for the National Quality Forum, The Joint Commission, AONE, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the Federation of State Medical Boards, the National Summit on Overuse (held by The Joint Commission and American Medical Association), the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Maine Quality Counts, among others. She has also been a faculty member for the Dartmouth Summer Symposium on Quality Improvement and was named its 2013 "wizard."

For nearly a decade, she was an editor of Perspectives at the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine.

Ms. Gibson received the American Medical Writers Association Award for her outstanding contributions to public interest reporting on critical healthcare issues.

Her first book, Wall of Silence, puts a human face on the Institute of Medicine report To Err is Human. Her other books, Treatment Trap, Battle Over Health Care, and Medicare Meltdown, chronicle the behind-the-scenes forces shaping healthcare today. Wall of Silence and Treatment Trap have been translated into Japanese, and Treatment Trap was also translated into Portuguese. The Chinese translation of Treatment Trap won the prestigious Open Book Award from China Times.

She is a graduate of Georgetown University and holds a master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
