The three states of experience—waking, dreaming, and deep, dreamless sleep—form a cycle that we all continuously move through in life.

In the waking state (which is what you're in now, as you read this), you are aware of and identify with your body and mind, and you experience the world through your five senses.

In the dream state, you lose awareness of your body and stop identifying with it, yet you remain aware of and identified with your mind, immersed in the dreams that it creates.

In deep, dreamless sleep, you lose awareness of both body and mind, as the mind enters into what in Sanskrit is called laya—a state of dissolution.

Then, when you wake up, you regain awareness of your body and mind and once again identity with them.

Yet different from the body and mind is the unchanging consciousness, which remains throughout all three states as the experiencer of them.

It is this unchanging consciousness that is the real you.
