Shape-Shifting GOAT Robot Tackles Tough Terrain Like An Animal

Engineers at Switzerland’s Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne have developed a shape-shifting robot called GOAT (Good Over All Terrains), inspired by nature’s adaptability.

GOAT can morph between a rover and a sphere, allowing it to drive, roll, or even swim across challenging landscapes.

Unlike typical robots that follow the shortest path, GOAT optimizes its mode of movement based on the terrain, such as swimming through streams or rolling downhill.

Tested over a 2.8-mile path with varied terrains, GOAT demonstrated its versatility.

The robot’s simple design, relying on satellite navigation and minimal sensors, allows it to navigate with limited environmental knowledge, Forbes has reported.

Researchers hope to improve its algorithms and payload capacity for future applications.
