Eph 2:1
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

Eph 2:2
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.

Eph 2:3
Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

Paul says that we were "dead in our trespasses and sins." Many Christians teach that "mankind is drowning in this world of sin and we are to throw the life-preserver of Jesus out to them and rescue them..." That is ridiculous. Paul says that we are already dead in our trespasses and sin. A dead man can't grab onto a life-preserver. We are dead in our trespasses and sins and there is nothing we can do about it. We are made "alive" through Yeshua. Through Him we receive the Spirit of the Father and are "born again," or "born from above." Once again, this is an act of the Father. One cannot cause themselves to be born. We once walked according to Satan. Satan is referred to here as "the prince of the power of the air." If you think that means he controls the media, you might be correct. Paul reminds us that we are nothing more than sinners who are saved by Yeshua, nothing more. We owe it all to Him, not ourselves.
