Reno police officers fatally shoots armed man outside a hospital after a high-speed pursuit

The Reno Police Department is releasing body camera footage of an officer involved shooting that took place in the parking lot of Renown on Feb. 9.

At around 10:00 a.m. that day, the Sparks Police Department contacted RPD about finding Kupa’a Ke’a, who was accused of battering a woman with a gun earlier that morning. The woman had been hospitalized with serious injuries.

Sparks PD also told RPD that Kupa’a Ke’a way still armed with a gun and was homicidal and suicidal.

Police searched the area of 9th and Montello where they saw the car associated with Kupa’a Ke’a. The driver then headed north Sutro before officers caught up on Sutro and Wells and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

Kupa’a Ke’a, however, did not stop and fled at a high rate of speed south on Sutro. During the pursuit, Kupa’a Ke’a ran several red lights and nearly collided with several cars before entering into the parking lot at Renown.

Police say Kupa’a Ke’a drove through the parking lot and then back on to Mill Street. Officers continued to pursue Kupa’a Ke’a as he drove around Pickett Park before he re-entered the parking lot and became trapped.

Officers ordered Kupa’a Ke’a to put his hands up and exit the car. RPD says Kupa’a Ke’a ignored those commands and produced a gun. Police then fired their weapons.

Police then rendered aid to Kupa’a Ke’a. Officers also found a handgun at the suspect’s car door.

Kupa’a Ke’a way then taken into the hospital for treatment before he was pronounced dead on Feb. 15.
