Lama Dawa's Commentary:
This is a deceptively simple statement and yet extremely profound and extremely important for us.

The mind is luminous when it is not obscured by defilements.

There are two important points here.

The mind is luminous.

This is pointing to the true nature of the mind, that our true state is clear and knowing, but he's also saying that when we are obscured, when we are confused, when we are lost in our thinking and attached to the apparent reality of our thoughts.

In other words, when we mistake our thoughts as truth instead of seeing them for what they really are, projections from the mind, then wisdom is covered up.

So, the implication here is that through spiritual practice, opening the heart and meditation, we can.

Begin a process of lessening and removing and taking away the things that are covering up our true inner wisdom.

Seeing our thoughts for what they are, the projections of our mind accurately, without judgment, and then dropping them is the path of uncovering and revealing the wisdom that's within us all.
