This colorized footage offers a vivid glimpse into a unique moment during the 1898 Sampson Homecoming Naval Parade. Captured along the tracks near Riverside Park, two freight trains became impromptu observation platforms for a crowd of men and boys eager to witness the grand spectacle. The participants climbed onto the roofs of the stationary train cars, enjoying a perfect vantage point to watch the naval vessels parade up the river and eagerly awaiting their return.

As the ships sailed back, the engineer of one freight train began moving it toward the freight yards at Thirty-Third Street. Approximately 2,000 spectators, perched on the roofs of the cars, were carried along, creating a lively and spontaneous scene of excitement and ingenuity. This restored and colorized footage highlights the ingenuity and enthusiasm of the spectators during this historic naval celebration.
