Sacramento, California — On February 1, 2025, around 11:45 p.m., an Elk Grove Police Department officer attempted to stop a Ford Explorer with no license plates near Auberry Drive and Spengler Drive. The driver, later identified as 22-year-old Jonnie Bartholomew, refused to pull over, leading officers on a pursuit through southern Sacramento County. Deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office joined the chase to assist.

As the pursuit reached Sunrise Greens Drive and Elsie Avenue, Bartholomew allegedly fired at pursuing officers, hitting a Sacramento County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle. The chase continued onto Highway 99 before Bartholomew exited onto Florin Road. At 69th Street and Lemon Hill Avenue, he attempted a U-turn. In response, an Elk Grove officer used their patrol car to ram the suspect’s vehicle. Another officer then exited his vehicle and, along with the first officer, discharged his firearm. Bartholomew was struck, while a female passenger in the vehicle was unharmed.

After officers approached the vehicle to provide medical aid, a handgun was reportedly found inside. Despite life-saving efforts, Bartholomew was pronounced deceased. No officers or deputies were injured during the incident.
