The Greatness and Virtue of the Holy Month of Ramadan: Verse 185 of Surah Al-Baqarah
Asslamoalaikum sisters brothers and elders, this islamic informative video offers an in-depth analysis of the greatness and virtues associated with the Holy Month of Ramadan, specifically focusing on Verse 185 of Surah Al-Baqarah. We will describe the spiritual, social, and personal transformations that occur during this month of fasting and devotion. Viewers will gain insights into how Ramadan serves as a time for self-improvement, empathy, and increased devotion to Allah Almighty.
The month of Ramadan is one of the holiest and most significant periods in the Islamic calendar. It is a time of spiritual reflection, devotion, and self-discipline. The Quran highlights the importance of Ramadan in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185):
"The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So, whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey—then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful." (Quran 2:185)
This verse emphasizes the divine purpose of Ramadan and establishes fasting as an obligation upon all able believers. It also underscores the mercy of Allah in allowing exemptions for those facing difficulties.
The Quran describes Ramadan as the month in which it was revealed, making it distinct and superior to other months. The significance of this revelation is highlighted in another verse:
"Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree." (Quran 97:1)
The Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Decree) occurs in the last ten nights of Ramadan and is considered the most blessed night of the year. Worship on this night is better than a thousand months of worship.
The command to fast in Ramadan is explicitly stated in Quran 2:185. Fasting is not just a ritual but a means to attain taqwa (God-consciousness), as stated in Quran 2:183:
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."
The virtues of fasting are immense. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
"Whoever fasts in Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 38; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 760)
Fasting strengthens patience, self-discipline, and empathy for the less fortunate, enhancing a believer's moral and spiritual state.
Islam acknowledges human limitations and grants ease where necessary. Quran 2:185 states that those who are ill or traveling may postpone their fasts and make them up later. This reflects Allah’s mercy, reinforcing that religious obligations should not cause undue hardship.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) further emphasized this when he said:
"Allah loves that His concessions be taken as He dislikes disobedience to Him." (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 5866)
This highlights the balance in Islamic teachings between devotion and practicality.
Increased Worship and Connection with Allah: Muslims engage in extra prayers (Taraweeh), recite the Quran, and seek forgiveness.
Charity and Generosity: Zakat (obligatory almsgiving) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) increase during Ramadan, helping the poor and needy.
Community and Unity: Muslims worldwide fast together, reinforcing a sense of brotherhood and collective devotion.
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a festival of gratitude and joy. The Quran commands:
"And [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful." (Quran 2:185)
Eid is marked by communal prayers, charity (Zakat al-Fitr), and expressions of thankfulness to Allah for the strength to complete the fasts.
The greatness and virtue of Ramadan, as emphasized in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185), lie in its role as the month of the Quran, fasting, worship, and divine mercy. It is a time for spiritual renewal, personal growth, and increased devotion. By fasting with sincerity and gratitude, believers strengthen their connection with Allah and attain greater righteousness. May Allah grant us the ability to make the most of this blessed month. Ameen.
Allah Hafiz
