YESTERDAY'S NEWSREEL ALBERT EINSTEIN ATOM RESEARCH, JOHNNY WEISSMULLER NEW YORK MARATHON
This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Science’s Jekyll and Hyde 1924-1949 The atom bomb explodes at Bikini Atoll (:42-1:00). Madame Curie is shown working at the Institut du Radium Pavillon Curie building (1:01-1:20). A younger Albert Einstein smokes a pipe (1:21-1:27). Dr. Langmuir stands in front of the National Aniline & Chemical Company sign (1:28-1:32). Dr. Millikan works on his cosmic ray theory (1:33-1:41). A group of climbers rock hunt uranium. One holds up a chunk from chipping with a rock hammer (1:42-1:56). The Manhattan Project laboratory buildings in Oak Ridge, Tennessee are panned. A top-down cyclotron view is given. Energy flashes between two objects (1:57-2:25). An atomic bomb is tested at Alamogordo, New Mexico, its mushroom cloud rising (2:26-2:38). Before and after photos are shown of Hiroshima (2:39-2:56). Planes and warships are shown on July 25, 1946 in the Lagoon of Bikini Atoll. The Japanese cruiser Sakawa is docked. Test Baker, the first underwater nuclear explosion, sends a mushroom cloud high into the air. The radioactive mist cloud rolls into shore (2:57-3:52). David Lilienthal, first chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, is shown. Lab workers at Oak Ridge test a box with a Geiger counter (3:53-4:37). The cornerstone is laid at the United Nations building. A split screen shows the rising atomic blast and a rising shot of the United Nations building (4:38-5:00). Twice a King! 1931 Ten-year-old Prince Michael of Romania reviews his troops as they parade by (5:01-5:52). Personalities 1928 Entrepreneur Marshall Field poses in Chicago (5:58-6:13). Actress Anne Harding kisses a baby lion (6:14-6:32). Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff poses onboard a ship (6:33-6:55). Destruction in Jersey 1924. Multiple fire hoses attempt to put out a chemical plant fire in Jersey City. A nurse pours coffee into cups for firemen. Men, women, and children from the neighboring tenement building huddle. The walls, engulfed in flames, begin to tumble (6:56-7:54). Digest Poll 1924-1932 Literary Digest publisher RJ Cudahy is shown. His team passes out magazine Presidential voting ballots in 1924 and in 1928. These secret ballots were a marketing ploy. Women workers stuff envelopes. Tubs are full of mail bags. In 1932, the results of the poll favored Hoover; however, Roosevelt won and the Literary Digest closes (7:55-9:36). Aviation 1925 A Naval airplane wreck is shown at Bayshore Park, Maryland. Contestants in a seaplane race take off on water and rise into the air. The winning pilot shown would go onto become General Jimmy Doolittle (9:37-10:40). Fashions of the Day 1920 Women’s golfing attire included a sweater, plaid skirt, and matching hat. Women practice shots against a canvas wall and putt (10:41-11:14). Sports 1918 All male runners compete in the New York City marathon (11:15-11:52). 1927 San Francisco George Kojac breaks a backstroke record ahead of becoming an Olympic gold medalist the following year. Johnny Weissmuller, future actor, also breaks a record
