World's largest mass gathering ends in India

India’s Maha Kumbh Mela, a six-week Hindu festival, drew to an end on February 26, 2025, in the northern city of Prayagraj. Held in the sacred waters of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, the gathering brought some 640 million people to the festival grounds in the state of Uttar Pradesh. This year’s event was marred by tragic stampedes that left dozens dead and nearly 100 injured.
