Phoenix, AZ - Investigators released graphic, edited body-cam video of a police shooting in Gilbert that left a suspect dead following a possible kidnapping earlier this month.
The incident started at a hotel parking lot in the area of 53rd Avenue and Latham Street, which is south of Interstate 10, in Phoenix, where the suspect, who was later identified as 41-year-old David Garcia, tried to force a 25-year-old woman into his truck around 5:45 p.m.
“The male is trying to, um, put her into a red truck,” a 911 caller said.
Garcia also reportedly had a gun.
“He’s trying to shoot her. He’s pointing it at her as we speak,” the 911 caller said.
Garcia then drove away with the woman in the truck.
Officers responded and gathered information about where they might be.
Several hours later, Neighborhood Enforcement Team officers found the pair in the truck near Southern Avenue and Dobson Road in Mesa, police said.
Officers watched the truck and followed it into Gilbert.
While Garcia was driving south on Higley Road passing Williams Field Road, police tried to disable the truck but failed.
Detectives said Garcia made a U-turn on Higley and started shooting at officers, hitting one of their vehicles.
Special Assignment Unit officers used their vehicles to force Garcia’s truck to stop.
“Hey, he’s shooting at us! He’s shooting at us!” Yelled one officer as he got out of his car with a rifle.
That’s when the four SAU officers opened fire.
The body-camera video from the second officer showed him shooting his rifle into the back window of the truck.
“Get her out! Get her out!” The officer yelled once the shooting stopped.
The passenger’s side door was locked, so officers had to break open the window to open the door.
The second officer kept his rifle pointed at the suspect.
Officers pulled her to safety and discovered Garcia had shot her, police said.
Police say she wasn’t hit by police gunfire.
The woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but she is now in stable condition and is expected to survive.
Garcia was hospitalized, but later died.
No officers were hurt.
