BOMBSHELL Dropped On Starmer Over Defence Spending Lies!

Right, so Keir Starmer has decided to hike defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 at the expense of international foreign aid, which is being cut from 0.5% to 0.3% and as much as many of us, especially on the left, but not uniquely so have heavily criticised Labour’s refusal to spend on real things that matter in this country, the services we all rely on continue to crumble and we’ve seen him sending billions to Ukraine and then billions more, has had a lot of people questioning his priorities, but to axe a large proportion of a relatively small aid budget anyway, in order to spend more on defence, to spend more on bombs and bullets, to see the shares on the likes of BAE systems soar in anticipation of greater profits, is particularly sick. Where the knuckle draggers of a our society will care not one iota about this, where the right wing media might cheer such a move, this is bombs and bullets being paid for at the expense of not the poorest and most vulnerable people in this country, but the poorest and most vulnerable on Earth. Where Starmer acts like the UK is some global arbiter in matters of war, he couldn’t care less about fighting poverty and that fight must be sacrificed so he can keep playing soldier, soldier and dressing up in fatigues and acting all tough.
It isn’t tough to punch down on the most vulnerable people on the planet, it is particularly sick, but worse, we know Starmer and his government are aware of the optics, because as always, there are the receipts.
Right, so Keir Starmer has announced a frankly depraved switch government spending priorities: a significant increase in defence spending which is going to be funded by deep cuts to the international aid budget. Now this is being put to us as a necessary step to bolster national security, but for one we aren’t currently at war with anyone and for two, you could have made other choices, such as, ooh I dunno, taxing the bloody rich! As such, all of this has sparked widespread criticism and raised a lot of questions from the media and from people commenting on social media about the total lack of morals it takes to make the conscious choice to sacrifice humanitarian aid for military expansionism. This is a policy shift that represents a complete betrayal of the world’s most vulnerable people, prioritising bombs and bullets over life-saving aid, all while aligning with the hawkish rhetoric of figures like the tangerine textured walking tragedy that is Donald Trump.
You see international aid is not a luxury or a charitable afterthought; it is not money given away for free to those who don’t need it, it is a lifeline for millions of people living in poverty, conflict, and crisis. The UK has long been a global leader in humanitarian assistance, providing funding for healthcare, education, disaster relief, and economic development in some of the world’s poorest countries, it is one of those few things successive awful governments have done that can actually be pointed to as a source of pride.
For example, the aid budget has supported initiatives such as vaccination programmes in sub-Saharan Africa, emergency food supplies for families fleeing war in Yemen, and rebuilding efforts in regions devastated by natural disasters like earthquakes and floods. These programmes save lives, reduce suffering, and foster long-term stability in regions plagued by instability, as well as strengthen ties politically as well, it is extremely worthwhile spending, it is a very small part of the national budget anyway and Starmer has almost halved it.
By cutting the aid budget, Starmer is not merely reallocating resources to bang the drums of war, he is pulling the rug out from under those who depend on this assistance. The decision to slash billions from the aid budget will have devastating consequences for vulnerable communities. Cuts to healthcare funding could mean fewer vaccines for children, adding to the risks of disease outbreaks, and potentially the next global pandemic, while reductions in education support could deprive millions of girls particularly of the chance to go to school. Governments moving money around can often just be viewed as a dull tedious thing they do, but this time it is so much more than that, these are life-and-death choices that will disproportionately affect the poorest and most marginalised people on the planet.
Even some mainstream media figures have been incredulous over this, I spotted a tweet by Robert Peston, who really isn’t a boat rocker at all, but even he went ahead and said:
‘I am pretty sure that in the Blair/Brown governments, if overseas aid had been slashed on the scale of today’s cuts, ministers would have resigned. If no minister does quit today or soon, that will be significant.’
It will, it’ll tell us there’s not a single minister with a conscience or an ounce of morals in this government.
In defending this decision, Labour have relied on a combination of misleading rhetoric and outright lies. They have framed the increase in defence spending as a necessary response to global threats, particularly the war in Ukraine and the threat posed by Russia, but this doesn’t stand up to even brief scrutiny. The UK already spends 2% of GDP on defence and there is little evidence to suggest that further increases are necessary to address current security challenges. NATO for example spend over $1.3tn annually on defence, compared to Russia spending about $84bn. This hike would have us spending an extra £13bn per year by 2034 and again I reiterate, we aren’t at war with anyone, Starmer just fancies a bit.
One of the most egregious lies told by Starmer and Rachel From Accounts about all of this, is their dismissal of the cuts to international aid not impacting the UK’s commitment to global development, because it should be obvious to anybody that cuts to this budget matters and already an unnamed cabinet minister has admitted that Starmer’s claims on this issue were “misleading.” Well that’s rather a polite way of saying he's lying again isn’t it? We all know Starmer, lies like a rug, that isn’t news, but what is, or at least should be is that they’re lying and we know they’re lying, because, they’ve spoken out about international aid cuts before, so lets cash in a few receipts shall we?
In 2021 Keir Starmer posted on Twitter that:
‘The Conservatives have just voted to cut international aid.
Cutting aid to help the poorest during a pandemic is callous – and not in our national interest.
Boris Johnson is damaging Britain’s reputation around the world.’
And now you are, but he’s not the only one aping Boris Johnson now having pleaded the opposite previously, Rachel From Accounts did it as well, having said at the same time that:
‘This Conservative government’s decision to cut overseas aid will diminish Britain, reduce our influence and undermine our security at home.
This is about the country we want to be, our position on the global stage and the leadership we can – and should – show.’
Well said Rachel, what a pity you evidently didn’t mean any of it.
David Lammy is another who ought to be regretting previous remarks here too, having said:
‘The international community is aghast that, at a time of unprecedented global crisis, the UK is the only member of the G7 to cut overseas aid.
Hugely damaging to our reputation as a global trusted ally.’
Again, nail on head, it’s just a pity you again are another who clearly didn’t believe in a word you said here, but one a Labour MP who might have the hardest job of explaining away here previous comments on this is Angela Rayner:
‘Tory MPs just voted to cut our international aid spending that supports the most vulnerable people in the world.
Don’t let them tell you they want the money to spend here in Britain instead, because they voted to leave our hungry kids with no food too.’
And so have you! You could have again removed the two child benefit cap, you could have taken the decision to not freeze child benefit going into the next fiscal year, but it’s more war and you’re just sat there in silence, dead behind the eyes as ever.
The reality is that cutting billions from the aid budget will inevitably lead to the scaling back or cancellation of vital global programmes. This dishonesty from Starmer and Co undermines public trust at a time it is already virtually rock bottom where this lot are concerned and reveals the extent to which Starmer is willing to lie to our faces to do as he pleases.
Another troubling aspect of Starmer’s decision is the timing and context. The announcement comes ahead of an upcoming meeting with Donald Trump, who has long been a vocal critic of international aid, because of course he is, he’d probably slap tariffs on it if he could as well as being a proponent of increased military spending, he has of course been demanding other countries pay more and this looks to all intents and purposes as Starmer jumping when Trump told him to. Team Keith has been working to align UK policy with Trump’s aggressive stance on defence and foreign policy since he came back into the Presidency and at a time when he looks even more unstable than he did last time he was President, more and more people are looking at this and thinking Europe looks more attractive by the day as a better economic prospect. This alignment with Trump has nothing to do with diplomacy though, it is about political posturing. By cutting aid and boosting defence spending, Starmer is sending a clear message to Trump and other hardliners: the UK is willing to prioritise military might over humanitarian principles. Starmer seeks to be as amoral as Trump in essence and that is extremely disturbing.
Trump has repeatedly called for cuts to foreign aid, describing it as a waste of money, and has pushed NATO allies to increase their defence spending, so by acquiescing to these demands, Starmer is not only undermining the UK’s moral leadership on the global stage but also aligning himself with a worldview that prioritises power and dominance over cooperation and compassion with his subservience to Trumps world outlook. This is a far cry from the values of fairness, equality, and international solidarity that Starmer once claimed to champion and a helluva long way from any semblance of a human rights and having a career in standing up for those.
The most alarming aspect of Starmer’s defence spending hike though is the possibility that it could pave the way for greater UK involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, fears growing that this move is a precursor to sending UK troops into Ukraine and whilst Starmer has not yet confirmed any such plans, the combination of increased military spending and the hawkish rhetoric that he seems to think makes him look tough is causing a lot of concern for a lot of people here in the UK.
The introduction of UK troops would be virtually guaranteed to exacerbate tensions and increase the risk of a broader confrontation with Russia. In addition to that, it raises questions about the UK’s role in the conflict and whether this decision is driven by genuine security concerns or if it has more to do with Starmer prancing and preening on the global stage, where he loves to be most of all. Either way, the potential consequences for the UK are dire, and the fact that Starmer is willing to entertain such a possibility to suit his own vanity it seems, is a cause for serious concern.
Starmer’s decision to cut international aid in order to fund increased defence spending is a betrayal of the world’s most vulnerable people. It is a choice to prioritise military power over humanitarian need, to value bombs and bullets over vaccines and schools. This decision will have real and devastating consequences for millions of people who rely on international aid to survive. It will mean fewer resources for healthcare, education, and disaster relief, and it will undermine the UK’s reputation as a global leader in humanitarian assistance. All so Starmer can apparently look big and clever. Well the opposite is true and he should be rightfully panned for it. A weak leader, who feels the need to do this to show strength shouldn’t be within a million miles of power.
Meanwhile, whilst we’re considering maybe causing problems for ourselves militarily versus Russia, we’re already doing it in Gaza, as we’re apparently still conducting spy flights over the Strip, despite there being a ceasefire and we’re only doing it when hostages are being released, all against the spirit at least of a ceasefire that our actions at worst, could contribute to collapsing.
