74-year-old Antonio Céspedes Saldierna, along with Horacio Lopez Peña wre killed after driving over an IED that authorities believe was planted by Mexican Drug Cartels.
The Texas Rancher, who worked his land on both sides of the border, was driving just south of Brownsville Texas when he hit the explosive device, causing it to detonate, according to local media. His wife was sent to the hospital with injuries.
Officials issued an urgent safety warning for the Rio Grande Valley.
Border officials are saying this latest explosion is part of a ‘growing’ threat by the cartels.
In fact, cartels have authorized the use of drone explosives against CBP personnel and U.S. law enforcement officers at the southern border and have been making violent threats on social media, threatening to kill ICE agents, according to a pair of memos sent out by CBP.
CBP is encouraging everyone in the agricultural industry to stay vigilant, remain aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.”
They are also directing those to avoid dirt roads, refrain from touching unfamiliar objects that could be explosive devices, and travel during the day time.
Saldierna’s son who is a US Army veteran said he considers this a terrorist attack.
