Tar Pits Carpinteria Natural Oil Seepage into Ocean

This is Carpinteria State Beach in Santa Barbara County. The natural tar pits where oil has been flowing from cracks on the beach cliffs for 1000s of years. The Chumash Indians used this tar to seal up their Tomals (boats) which they used for fishing and transport to the Channel Islands.
