In 1968, India established the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) to strengthen its external intelligence capabilities after facing critical security lapses in wars against China and Pakistan. Led by the legendary R. N. Kao, R&AW was created as an autonomous agency reporting directly to the Prime Minister. From its early success in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War to its covert operations against adversaries like Pakistan’s ISI, R&AW became a formidable force in global intelligence. Operating under extreme secrecy, it continues to safeguard India’s national security and geopolitical interests.
