Naples, Italy Rocked by Earthquake Swarm: Over 600 Recorded in Campi Flegrei Supervolcano Area in Four Days

Seismologists, volcanologists, and officials from Naples are racing against the clock as they implement school closures, set up emergency shelters, and plan evacuation routes for residents living within the region’s Campi Flegiri area, also known as the Phlegraean Fields, after over 600 earthquakes have been recorded since Saturday, with magnitudes ranging from M2.0 to M3.9; the most and the strongest the region has seen in 40 years.

The earthquake swarm, which began to intensify at 4:53 p.m. local time (3:53 UTC) on Saturday, February 15th, started at the volatile and unpredictable Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera, Europe’s supervolcano.

Immediately following the first earthquake, which registered at magnitude 2.4, a succession of moderate to strong earthquakes struck the region, causing concern among residents and officials, particularly since the Campi Flegiri volcanic caldera is part of the Campanian volcanic arc, which includes Mount Vesuvius.

Over 230 earthquakeswere recorded by Saturday evening in and around the area of the Campi Flegrei supervolcano, prompting officials to deploy the National Civil Protection Department to the area to bring emergency supplies to residents in need, and aid in evacuations when mandated.
