Populist Movement Makes Big Gains in German Election

After record breaking turnout on Sunday for Germany’s snap election, the biggest losers were the Socialist Democrats who lost significant vote share. Now, the CDU/CSU party must form a coalition government. They’ve stated they won’t work with the AfD party who received the 2nd most votes. So that leaves creating a coalition with the Socialist Democrats or a combination of the Green and Left parties.

The populist AfD party made big gains Sunday night, particularly among younger voters. The establishment may try to ice them out, but that won’t work forever.
