Pope Francis remains in critical but stable condition with early kidney failure, pneumonia, and a complex lung infection, the Vatican said Sunday.

While alert and responsive, he continues receiving high-flow oxygen and treatment for anemia.

Doctors warn his condition is fragile due to age and pre-existing lung disease, but no signs of sepsis have been reported.

Prayers have poured in globally, with Cardinal Timothy Dolan acknowledging the pope is likely near death.

Francis was unable to lead Mass, with Archbishop Rino Fisichella stepping in, the Associated Press has reported.

The Vatican has not addressed speculation about potential resignation or incapacitation.
