At least 3 dead, 1 missing after boat overturns near Staten Island: Officials

At least three people are dead, two others are injured and one is missing after a boat overturned off the coast of Staten Island in New York, officials confirmed.

Emergency responders received a call Sunday afternoon about a boat with six people on board overturning in the Ambrose Channel near Staten Island, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) told USA TODAY. Several agencies – including FDNY, city police, New Jersey State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard – responded to the incident.

The overturning was reported shortly after 12 p.m. when crews received an alert about a "vessel taking on water" near Breezy Point, a neighborhood located on the western tip of Queens’ Rockaway peninsula, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The agency deployed three rescue boats as well as an MH-65 helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, according to the statement.
