Honey from the Rock Blues – A Deep Blues Journey through Psalm 81

Psalm 81 is a powerful and prophetic call from God to His people, written by Asaph, one of King David's chief musicians. Asaph was not only a songwriter but also a prophet who penned songs that carried deep spiritual truths and warnings. This psalm was likely written during a time when Israel was straying from God's ways, chasing after false idols, and suffering the consequences of their rebellion.

In this song, God reminds His people of His faithfulness-how He rescued them from slavery in Egypt, provided for them in the wilderness, and longed to fill them with honey from the rock, a symbol of His abundant blessings. Yet, Israel refused to listen, choosing their own stubborn paths. This blues song captures the cry of God's heart, His desire to bless, and the pain of rejection when His people turn away.

** Psalm 81 (World English Bible - WEB)

For the Chief Musician. On an instrument of Gath. By Asaph.

1 Sing aloud to God, our strength!
Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob!
2 Raise a song, and bring here the tambourine,
the pleasant lyre with the harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the New Moon,
at the full moon, on our feast day.
4 For it is a statute for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5 He appointed it in Joseph for a testimony,
when he went out over the land of Egypt,
I heard a language that I didn't know.
6 "I removed his shoulder from the burden.
His hands were freed from the basket.
7 You called in trouble, and I delivered you.
I answered you in the secret place of thunder.
I tested you at the waters of Meribah." Selah.
8 "Hear, my people, and I will testify to you,
Israel, if you would listen to me!
9 There shall be no strange god in you,
neither shall you worship any foreign god.
10 I am Yahweh, your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
11 But my people didn't listen to my voice.
Israel desired none of me.

** Lyrics – "Honey from the Rock Blues"

(Deep Delta Blues – Slow and Soulful, raw and rich with feeling)

(Verse 1 – Calling Out)
Sing aloud to God, our strength,
Let the voices shake the night.
Raise a song, bring the tambourine,
Strike the strings and play it right.
Blow the trumpet at the New Moon,
When the feast is shining bright.

(Verse 2 – The Ancient Decree)
He laid the law on Jacob's seed,
A command for Joseph's sons.
He sent them walking out of Egypt,
Where they spoke a tongue unknown.
Then He said, "I have freed you-
From the burden, from the stone."

(Verse 3 – The Voice of Thunder)
"You called to me in trouble,
And I answered through the storm.
I spoke from the secret thunder,
Where the fire and wind are born.
I tested you at Meribah,
But you would not be reformed."

(Chorus – The Cry of God's Heart)
"Oh, my people, if you'd hear me…
Turn your heart and walk my way…
There'd be no hand of your oppressor…
No more chains to make you stray…
But you turned from me to idols,
And the dark led you away…"

(Verse 4 – The Stubborn Heart)
So He let them chase their counsel,
Left them to their own desire.
He let them run toward destruction,
Let them stumble in the fire.
But He still stood there in mercy,
Calling out to lift them higher.

(Bridge – The Judgment and Promise)
"If you'd listen, I would fight for you!
I would strike your foes to dust!
Your enemies would bow before me,
Like the wind bends iron to rust!
But you hardened like a desert stone…
Turned away from holy trust…"

(Verse 5 – The Longing of God)
But if you'd just return, my people,
You'd taste the finest grain.
You'd eat the honey from the mountain,
Drink the mercy in my name.
Oh, if you'd just return, my people,
You'd know my love again.

(Outro – Slow and Soulful, Guitar Weeping)
"Honey from the rock, child…"
"Sweetest gift you'll ever know…"
"But you gotta open your heart now…"
"Or be left where the cold winds blow…"
