The footage revealed the cruiser speeding through multiple intersections, passing three red lights without incident as the officers reassured each other with phrases like “You’re good.” Speeds fluctuated between 30 and 60 mph, but as they neared Rand Avenue, the cruiser accelerated to a staggering 68 mph. The traffic light at the intersection had been red for a full five seconds before the crash—an unmistakable detail captured by the dashcam. Inside the vehicle, the officers appeared distracted by a Chipotle bag on the dashboard. Officer Devore, who was driving, used his right hand to steady the bag, only returning it to the steering wheel a split second before impact. At nearly 70 mph, the cruiser barreled through the red light and T-boned a blue Kia driven by a 63-year-old man who had a green light traveling southbound on Rand Avenue.

The collision was catastrophic. The Kia spun wildly into a nearby parking lot before ricocheting back onto West Exchange Street, where it struck a third vehicle—a westbound Mercedes driven by a 46-year-old man. All three vehicles were totaled. The Kia driver sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, requiring surgery and a lengthy hospital stay; he was discharged just a week before February 20, 2025. It took emergency crews 16 minutes to free him from the wreckage. Officer Coblentz suffered a brain bleed and cracked the windshield with his head, while both he and Devore reported knee and arm injuries. They were treated at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center. The Mercedes driver escaped unharmed.
