Santa Faustina Kowalska, also known as Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament, was a Polish Roman Catholic mystic, visionary, and prophetess. She is venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint, and is known as the "Apostle of Divine Mercy".
Life
Faustina was born in Głogowiec, Poland, in 1905. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925, and received the religious name Sister Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament.
During her life, Faustina reported having a number of visions of Jesus Christ, which she recorded in her diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul. In these visions, Jesus revealed to her his desire that a Feast of Divine Mercy be established on the first Sunday after Easter, and that a special image of himself be painted according to his instructions.
Faustina died of tuberculosis in 1938, at the age of 33. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
Legacy
Faustina's diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul, has become a popular devotional work, and her visions have led to the spread of the Divine Mercy devotion throughout the world. The image of Jesus as revealed to Faustina, known as the Divine Mercy image, is now widely venerated in the Catholic Church.
Faustina is also considered to be a patron saint of mercy, and her feast day is celebrated on October 5.
