Potiphar has cast anointed Joseph into the ‘pit’ where the prisoners of the ‘King’ are imprisoned. He is laid in iron where “his feet were hurt with fetters.” But before too long of time passes, it is seen that the Spirit of the Lord is yet with him. In that, he makes known to Joseph the opposite destinies of two of the prisoners of Pharaoh. (One would be brought out and restored to his original position and the other one would be brought out and hanged- similar to the contrasting destinies of the two malefactors on the 2 crosses beside Jesus.) And just as the Spirit of the Lord was with Joseph in the pit, so it is also in the Anti-type: the Romans/satan put Jesus to death, but the casting of Him into the Pit of Hades does not remove the Spirit from Him either. Jesus is surrounded by the wicked inhabitants that are in the “Pit” who are berating Him, being grievously weighted down. In that, with the use of typology, Scripture says of Him in the Book of Jonah (read Chapters 1&2) “my soul fainted within me..”… “thou hadst cast me into the deep… and thy waves (typical of God’s Wrath) passed over me”… “…yet I will look again toward thy holy temple”… “I remembered the Lord and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.” Jesus began to ‘pray’… (while by all appearances to those evil powers in Hades, Jesus was one of the worst of the transgressors of the Law of Moses; just one of the particularly wicked {men and spirits} beings now under the seemingly same condemned confinement and debt service being wrought in the ‘Pit/Death’ in the depths of ‘Hades’). Being that the weight of the sin of the world was upon Him, Jesus was down in heart and in the worst of circumstances… but then He ‘remembered’ to offer up His sacrifice of praise in thanksgiving (how eerily strange and unprecedented in that place this must have been and must have sounded to all their sin-dulled ears). So it was, that the power latent within Him begins to rise up, the One to whom his assailants but a moment ago seemed to them but just a condemned boisterous deceived religious man who had lived on earth, somehow now begins to pray and speak as one with confidence before them.

At least part of His prayer to the Father constituted His preaching of the Gospel to the spirits in prison with Him (as seen in the type of Joseph ministering to the prisoners in the pit with him) which is seen in 1st Peter 3:19 where it says, “By which also he (Jesus) went and preached unto the spirits in prison…” These imprisoned spirits (not mere men, for men are living souls and not spirits) are referred to as being in chains in 2nd Peter 2:4… “…God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment…”) At its conclusion, Jesus proclaims to them… (as typed in Jonah 2:8-9) “They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.” (These words spoken by Jonah were before being vomited out of the belly of the whale and they point to Jesus’ words being spoken before He is resurrected out of the belly of Hades.) In that, Jesus proclaims the Gospel of saving grace “to the spirits in prison” as it is Written… “For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged as men (see the Greek) in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit” (or as spirits). [1st Peter 4:6] See Jude 1:6 which says, “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation (referring to the fallen angels leaving their natural habitation and mating with the daughters of men in Genesis 6:4), he hath reserved in everlasting (Age-lasting) chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day” (when these spirits would be judged as men are judged). Compare this to 1st Peter 3:18-20… “For Christ also hath...
