SHOCK Shift By Hamas Wrecks Israel’s Deportation Dreams!
Right, so Israel have been caught on the backfoot again as Hamas put forward ana offer to them that should be too good to refuse, but of course refused it absolutely will be, because the government of Benjamin Netanyahu is too fragile to survive it. It doesn’t matter that lives are potentially on the line here, for Netanyahu they never have been the issue, the only issue that matters to him is staying in power and that has now been exposed in the most blatant way possible, with Hamas essentially offering everything Israel say they want, when the reality is they want the complete opposite. His government, his selfish desires must come first, so quite how he’s going to wriggle out of the problem he now has will be I think rather entertaining to watch, because surely, there really is no way he can come out of this one smelling like roses.
Right, so Benjamin Netanyahu is in a fair old spot of bother here it delights me no end to say, having to jump through hoops to stay in power as Hamas catch him completely off guard, but only because his only concern and only real priority is keeping his own backside firmly in place as Prime Minister. If he was any kind of leader and representative, he wouldn’t have been so easily outmanoeuvred as he has been, he would be able to put hostages, their families, his people first, but instead his obsession with power and the depraved alliances he has made to keep himself there means he’s no longer really even calling the shots, the takeover of Gaza more important than those people Hamas took, that they still hold from the night of October 7th 2023.
We are of course discussing the current Gaza ceasefire and where it goes from here, the proposal for the next stage of the ceasefire itself, brokered as this was by international mediators, chiefly Egypt and Qatar, with the US claiming credit too, despite enabling Israel to do everything it has been doing and no change of leadership in the US has changed the fact Israeli money still buys all the influence it needs there. The ceasefire is of course is divided into three phases, but it is that second phase that currently concerns us. Phase 1 of course has involved a temporary halt to hostilities, the release of some Israeli hostages held by Hamas, women and the elderly as that has been and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, which Israel are still interfering with, especially holding up such essentials as water, shelter and heavy plant machinery to shift rubble. Phase 2 is where things have become more complicated though and where Hamas has given Netanyahu a massive headache.
Phase 2 on the face of it, would involve a more permanent ceasefire, the release of all remaining Israeli hostages, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of Gaza. The catch here of course has been that Israel, under Netanyahu’s leadership, has been trying to avoid moving to Phase 2. Why? Because it would mean ending the war without achieving their stated goal of ‘destroying Hamas’ which is anathema to many in Israel, a sure sign of Netanyahu’s failure, but it is also something Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners, like Bezalel Smotrich and his Religious Zionism party, simply won’t accept, threatening to collapse the government of Netanyahu if he agrees to it, no ifs or buts.
This is where Hamas come in:
‘Hamas official tells AFP that the movement is ready to release all remaining Israeli captives at once in the second phase of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Taher al-Nono, media advisor to Hamas's political bureau, stated, "Hamas has informed mediators that it is ready, as part of an agreement, to release all prisoners in the second phase at once, not in batches as was the case in the first phase ... in exchange for the release of all Palestinian prisoners and detainees from the occupation's prisons."
"Hamas showed mediators that it is ready for a single exchange of all prisoners by releasing all Israeli prisoners held by it and by the resistance, living and dead, including senior military officers."
He explained that this step is "to confirm our seriousness and complete readiness to move forward in ending this issue, as well as to proceed
with steps to consolidate the ceasefire until a sustainable ceasefire is reached."
Nono did not specify the number of Israeli prisoners still being held by Hamas or other resistance factions in Gaza, nor how many of them are still alive after the first phase of the exchange.
However, another Hamas source said that "Hamas has not disclosed the number of remaining prisoners, whether dead or alive, and information about them is subject to negotiations within the framework of the second phase.”’
Yes, Hamas has offered to release all remaining Israeli hostages in one go, but only if Israel agrees to move to Phase 2 and implement a permanent ceasefire. This should be a no brainer to an honest negotiator, but Netanyahu is anything but and as such he is placed in an impossible position. On one hand, he’s under immense pressure from the families of the hostages and the Israeli public to bring their loved ones home. On the other hand, agreeing to Phase 2 would certainly collapse his coalition government, as far-right ministers like Smotrich have threatened to quit if the war ends without Hamas’s total defeat and to reinforce that, one minister that quit over phase one being agreed to has already thrown his not insignificant weight around to reinforce this point. So cue former Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir in a statement he put out on Twitter:
‘Nothing can whitewash the reckless surrender deal signed by the Israeli government, which includes the release of thousands of murderous terrorists from prison, a dramatic increase in logistical aid to Hamas, and the withdrawal of IDF forces from the vast majority of the Gaza Strip—allowing Hamas to rebuild itself. All this while the government has full American backing to unleash hell on Hamas if all our captives are not released immediately.
I call on the Prime Minister and ministers to come to their senses and immediately return to a total war of annihilation against Hamas. Only this way can we bring back all our captives without recklessly endangering national security, and only this way can we achieve absolute victory.’
Where Ben Gvir left the coalition government of Netanyahu over phase one, the departure of him and his Otzma Yehudit party from the coalition was not enough to collapse the government. Smotrich’s party departing however, absolutely would.
Hamas knowing all of this have effectively called Netanyahu’s bluff. They’ve exposed the fact that Netanyahu’s priority isn’t rescuing the hostages it’s staying in power. And that’s a damning indictment of his leadership as well as confirmation if needed to more and more Israelis that he doesn’t are about them, their families, anybody except himself.
As a result, Netanyahu’s position is weaker than ever. His coalition government is held together by a fragile alliance with far-right parties who have no interest in compromise and never will, beholden utterly to the settler movement as they are. Bezalel Smotrich, for example, has openly called for the forced evacuation of Gazans and their ‘voluntary migration’ in complete agreement with Donald Trump’s plan which he absolutely adores, it gives him everything he wants, but all in all it’s just a euphemism for ethnic cleansing. These extremists see the Gaza conflict as an opportunity to reshape the region, and they’re willing to sacrifice the hostages to achieve their goals.
Netanyahu knows that if he agrees to Phase 2, his government could fall. But if he doesn’t, he risks losing public support as more Israelis grow frustrated with his failure to prioritize the hostages. It’s a lose-lose situation—and one entirely of his own making.
Netanyahu has framed the genocide in Gaza as a fight for Israel’s survival against Hamas, but as the death toll in Gaza climbs, now over 60,000, mostly women and children and far more of the hostages have remained in captivity than have been rescued, not to mention of course the many more hostages Israel themselves hold of course, more and more Israelis are asking the valid questions of whether the military action in Gaza is really about security or about Netanyahu’s political survival.
Hamas are certainly not saints here. They’ve committed atrocities, and holding hostages is a violation of international law. But by refusing to agree to a deal that would bring the hostages home, Netanyahu is effectively using them as pawns in his political game and whilst that is something we can’t ignore, increasingly more and more Israelis are finding it impossible to ignore as well.
The implications of this stalemate are huge. For Gaza, it means more death and destruction as the ceasefire ultimately fails as seems virtually certain. For Israel, it means a deepening moral and political crisis, when they make so much of their morality. And for the international community, it’s a stark reminder of the limits of diplomacy in the face of entrenched political interests and for those leaders still insisting on backing Netanyahu and Israel up, come what may, a reckoning awaits them too as the likelihood of being found complicit in Israel’s war crimes continues to grow.
Netanyahu’s refusal or inability to move to Phase 2 isn’t just a failure of leadership, it’s a betrayal of the Israeli people. As much as people watching this may be beyond caring about such notions at this point, he very much does, it matters enormously to him and his position and his ability to retain it and at this point keep himself out of jail.
Meanwhile, increasingly Israel are now eying up a new threat, perhaps the Greater Israel ideology can save Netanyahu from his current predicament – if in doubt, start war with someone else, but is Turkey really a likely target? Well there’s evidence pointing towards it and you can find out all about that if you care to check out this video recommendation here as your suggested next watch.
