Federal Judge Dale Ho has indefinitely paused Mayor Eric Adams' criminal trial, appointing former U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement to argue against the Department of Justice's motion to dismiss the case. Both the DOJ and Adams' defense sought dismissal, citing interference with the mayor's duties, particularly in supporting President Trump's immigration policies. Judge Ho emphasized the case's public significance, setting a March 4 deadline for Clement's arguments and a potential hearing on March 14. This development follows Acting Assistant Attorney General Emil Bove's directive to drop the charges, a move that led to resignations from Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office prosecutors, who alleged a "quid pro quo" between Adams and the DOJ. Both Adams and DOJ officials have denied these allegations.
