Lawrence, IN — The Lawrence Police Department released bodycam and dashcam video of the incident between a man and officers that went viral.
Witness videos had been circulating social media since the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, at the Walmart store on Pendleton Pike.
Police say a Lawrence police officer spotted a white Ford Explorer parked in the emergency fire lane in front of the store and pulled his fully marked police car behind it.
In the officer's bodycam video, the officer asks the man if he has his ID, to which the man responds, "No, I don't."
Bodycam video shows the officer and man continue to argue with each other.
At one point, the man can be heard saying, "Whenever you got your uniform off, holler at me then."
Shortly after, the officer then tells the man, "I'm about to f*** your night up. I don't know who you think I am, but I'm that mother f***** that will f*** your night up."
As the officer approaches the man to put handcuffs on him, the fight begins, involving multiple punches, the man taking one of the officers to the ground, one of the officers tasing the man and one of the officers kicking the man.
Once the man is in handcuffs, he can be heard making multiple threatening remarks toward officers, including, "I swear to God, man. I'm gonna kill you" and "You think an officer gonna put his hands on me, and it's over?"
On Wednesday, Feb. 19, Lawrence Mayor Deb Whitfield confirmed one of the city's police officers is on administrative leave as the investigation continues into the incident.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office said it has not filed charges at this time against the man as the investigation continues into the incident.
"The community’s trust is of utmost importance, and we remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity," Lawrence Deputy Chief Travis Cline said in a news release.
