John Marne's police career seems to have come to an end for although the stab wounds have healed, he will have a permanent limp. But Chief Superintendent Miller has a strange task earmarked for him as a Crime Squad detective. It is an unsolved murder which involves the Mafia take- over of gambling clubs, a wealthy woman with something to hide, and a missing photographer. For John Marne it is a beat that stretches from the meanest quarter of the city to the lush Cheshire Set homes; and for this detective it is the loneliest of lonely beats.
