"Without loving kindness for ourselves, it is difficult, if not impossible, to genuinely feel it for others."
-Pema Chodron, in her book, The Places that Scare You, A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times.

Lama Dawa's Commentary:
Pema Chodron is a highly respected, well regarded contemporary Buddhist teacher in the Tibetan tradition.

With this quote, she reminds us, very wisely, that love and kindness and compassion and empathy all start with ourselves.

We are developing in our spiritual practice and journey the capacity to see evenly and equally that all beings have the same needs and the same worthiness.

So instead of being judgmental and opinionated or harsh on ourselves or others, we need to even things out and have the same kindness towards others that we have towards ourselves, and the same kindness that we have towards ourselves that we have towards others.
