Shine on Us, Lord (Inspired by Psalm 80)
** Psalm 80 is a cry for restoration and divine intervention, composed by Asaph, one of King David's chief musicians. This psalm was likely written during a time of national crisis for Israel, possibly during the Assyrian invasions or the fall of the northern kingdom. It reflects the deep yearning of a people who have experienced devastation and long for God's face to shine upon them once more.
The repeated refrain, "Restore us, Yahweh, let your face shine, that we may be saved", serves as a powerful plea for revival. This message remains relevant today, as we seek restoration in our personal lives and in our nations. The psalmist reminds us of God's past deliverance, His justice, and the hope that He will once again rescue His people.
** Psalm 80 (World English Bible - WEB)
1 Hear us, Shepherd of Israel,
you who lead Joseph like a flock,
you who sit above the cherubim, shine out.
2 Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up your might!
Come to save us!
3 Turn us again, God.
Cause your face to shine,
and we will be saved.
4 Yahweh, God of Armies,
how long will you be angry against the prayer of your people?
5 You have fed them with the bread of tears,
and given them tears to drink in large measure.
6 You make us a source of contention to our neighbors.
Our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 Turn us again, God of Armies.
Cause your face to shine,
and we will be saved.
8 You brought a vine out of Egypt.
You drove out the nations, and planted it.
9 You cleared the ground for it.
It took deep root, and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow.
Its boughs were like God's cedars.
11 It sent out its branches to the sea,
Its shoots to the River.
12 Why have you broken down its walls,
so that all those who pass by the way pluck it?
13 The boar out of the wood ravages it.
The wild animals of the field feed on it.
14 Turn again, we beg you, God of Armies.
Look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vine,
15 the stock which your right hand planted,
the branch that you made strong for yourself.
16 It's burned with fire.
It's cut down.
They perish at your rebuke.
17 Let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.
18 So we will not turn away from you.
Revive us, and we will call on your name.
19 Turn us again, Yahweh God of Armies.
Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
** Lyrics: Shine on Us, Lord (Inspired by Psalm 80)
[Verse 1]
Oh, Shepherd of Israel, hear my cry,You who lead Joseph, don't pass us by.You sit above the cherubim, shining bright,Oh, stir up your power, Lord, bring us light.
[Chorus]Restore us, Lord of Hosts, let Your face shine bright,That we may be saved in Your mercy and might.
[Verse 2]How long, O Yahweh, will Your anger stay?We pray and we weep, but You turn away.Tears for bread, sorrow for wine,Enemies laughing, sayin' we ain't got time.
[Chorus]Restore us, Lord of Hosts, let Your face shine bright,That we may be saved in Your mercy and might.
[Verse 3]You brought a vine out of Egypt's land,Planted it strong with Your mighty hand.It reached the mountains, spread to the sea,Now the walls are broken-Lord, hear our plea!
[Bridge]The boar from the forest tears it down,Wild beasts trample all around.Turn again, Lord, look from above,Come and restore the vine You love.
[Verse 4 - Climactic Call]Let Your hand be on the Son of Man,The One You made strong, the Rock that stands. Then we won't turn, won't fall away,Revive us, Lord, we'll call Your name!
[Final Chorus - Extended]Restore us, Yahweh, let Your face shine bright,Burn through the darkness, bring back Your light.Oh, we will be saved, in Your mercy and might,Shine on us, Lord, through the endless night.
