Morning Devotion - Completely Safe

Jesus … is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
—Hebrews 7:24-25

During a hike, it can be exciting and rewarding to follow side trails that veer away from the main trail. Finding hidden parts of forests or mountains that few have seen before can be exhilarating.

But traveling in unmarked territory can sometimes be danger-ous. Authorities put up boundary signs for good reasons. We should obey those signs because they are usually posted to help keep us safe. Unfortunately, we sometimes hear about people who were hurt or killed because they ignored warnings and went into places of great danger.

Warning signs also exist in our spiritual life. In particular, Scripture points us to Jesus Christ as “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). In our reading from Hebrews today we see that through Jesus we have access to God. He is not a temporary Savior; he continually intercedes for us—that is, he continues to mark a clear and safe trail for us in this life and into the next.

Our pilgrimage as Christians is not simply for a period in this life. It is a journey that stretches forward into the joys and exciting discoveries God has prepared for us with him in eternity.

Protector of life, I long for the day when I will be completely safe. Thank you for giving me your Spirit, who provides a foretaste of the joys of eternal life. All I do is in your hands. Amen.
