A 3-year-old girl visiting Baltimore from South Africa for cancer treatment is almost ready to go home. The Maryland Proton Treatment Center is using a unique method to treat her for a dangerous form of cancer – Stage 3 soft tissue sarcoma. Her name is Cherrez Nel, and today's the day Nel wraps up her cancer treatment, but that's not the only thing the center has planned for her before she leaves.      The Proton Treatment Center is located in the University of Maryland's Bio Park here in West Baltimore. The center offers what's called proton therapy. It's a highly advanced form of radiation therapy that used positively charged particles to destroy cancer cells. The process increases the dose of radiation to the tumor itself while decreasing amount to the healthy surrounding tissue. Nel gets her last dose later this morning as she completes her cancer treatment.
