Blood in the Streets, Cry to the Sky (Psalm 79 Blues) – A Song of Lament and Redemption
** Psalm 79 is a powerful cry for justice and restoration, written by Asaph, a worship leader and prophet in ancient Israel. This psalm was composed in the aftermath of Jerusalem’s destruction, likely during the Babylonian invasion (586 B.C.). Asaph pleads with God, mourning the devastation of the Holy Temple, the loss of innocent lives, and the humiliation of God's people. Yet, amid the sorrow, there is an unshaken faith in God’s mercy and justice.
This blues song captures the depth of Psalm 79—its pain, its plea for divine intervention, and its promise of eternal praise. The raw emotion of the blues perfectly reflects the psalmist's sorrow and longing for restoration. Let this song take you into the heart of a broken city crying out to God, and may it remind us all that justice and mercy belong to Him.
** Psalm 79 (World English Bible - WEB)
A Psalm by Asaph.
1 God, the nations have come into your inheritance.
They have defiled your holy temple.
They have laid Jerusalem in heaps.
2 They have given the dead bodies of your servants to be food for the birds of the sky,
the flesh of your saints to the animals of the earth.
3 They have shed their blood like water around Jerusalem.
There was no one to bury them.
4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors,
a scoffing and derision to those who are around us.
5 How long, Yahweh? Will you be angry forever?
Will your jealousy burn like fire?
6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you,
on the kingdoms that don’t call on your name,
7 for they have devoured Jacob,
and destroyed his homeland.
8 Don’t hold the iniquities of our forefathers against us.
Let your tender mercies speedily meet us,
for we are in desperate need.
9 Help us, God of our salvation, for the glory of your name.
Deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake.
10 Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Let it be known among the nations, before our eyes,
that vengeance for your servants’ blood is being poured out.
11 Let the sighing of the prisoner come before you.
According to the greatness of your power,
preserve those who are sentenced to death.
12 Pay back to our neighbors seven times into their bosom
their reproach with which they have reproached you, Lord.
13 So we, your people and sheep of your pasture,
will give you thanks forever.
We will praise you forever, to all generations.
** Lyrics: Blood in the Streets, Cry to the Sky (Psalm 79 Blues)
[Slow blues groove, haunting slide guitar, deep rhythm section]
[Verse 1]
Oh Lord, the nations came marchin’ in,
Tore down Your house, left it stained with sin.
They laid Jerusalem in heaps so high,
Now the streets run red, and the children cry.
[Verse 2]
Your servants' blood flows like water, Lord,
No one left to bury, no hand to restore.
We’re a mockery, a tale to tell,
Our enemies laugh, sayin’, “Where is your help?”
[Chorus]
How long, oh Lord? Will You turn away?
Will Your fire burn hot, will You make them pay?
Pour out Your wrath, on those who don’t call Your name,
We’re cryin’ for mercy, under all this shame.
[Verse 3]
Don’t remember our fathers’ wrongs,
Show Your mercy, we ain’t that strong.
We’re in desperate need, Lord, hear our plea,
Come and deliver, set captives free.
[Bridge]
[Slow it down, deep and soulful]
Let the sigh of the prisoner rise,
Don’t let the innocent meet demise.
Sevenfold justice, Lord, make it right,
Turn back their shame in the dead of night.
[Chorus - Reprise]
How long, oh Lord? Will You turn away?
Will Your fire burn hot, will You make them pay?
Pour out Your wrath, on those who don’t call Your name,
We’re cryin’ for mercy, under all this shame.
[Outro - Soft and haunting]
But we, Your people, the sheep You know,
Will praise Your name as the ages roll.
From generation to generation strong,
Singin’ Your justice in a weary song.
