A derecho is a powerful, fast-moving windstorm associated with severe thunderstorms. It produces straight-line winds that can reach hurricane-force speeds (over 100 mph / 160 km/h) and cause widespread damage over hundreds of miles. Unlike tornadoes, which have rotating winds, derechos move in a straight line, often leaving destruction similar to that of a hurricane or tornado outbreak.

Key Features of a Derecho:
🌪️ Straight-line winds – No rotation like a tornado
⚡ Severe thunderstorms – Forms from a large storm system
📏 Large-scale impact – Can cover hundreds of miles
🌳 Widespread destruction – Uproots trees, damages buildings, and causes power outages

These storms are most common in the U.S. Midwest and South during late spring and summer but can occur in other regions too.
