Psalm 78: The Faithful Shepherd and the Wandering Flock Blues
** Psalm 78 is a powerful teaching psalm written by Asaph, one of King David’s chief musicians and seers (1 Chronicles 25:1-2). It serves as both a historical account and a prophetic warning, reminding God's people of His faithfulness and their repeated unfaithfulness.
This psalm recounts Israel’s history—from God’s miracles in Egypt to their deliverance through the Red Sea, their journey in the wilderness, and the eventual selection of David as king. It speaks of God’s mercy, patience, and justice, showing how He guided, provided, and disciplined His people when they strayed.
The song “The Faithful Shepherd and the Wandering Flock” brings this ancient message into a soulful blues style, capturing the tension between God’s unwavering love and humanity’s tendency to wander. Through deep, heartfelt lyrics, this song echoes God’s call to remember, repent, and return to Him.
Let this song be a reminder: God is faithful even when we are not.
** Psalm 78 (WEB – World English Bible)
A contemplation by Asaph.
78 Hear my teaching, my people.
Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.
2
I will open my mouth in a parable.
I will utter dark sayings of old,
3
which we have heard and known,
and our fathers have told us.
4
We will not hide them from their children,
telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh,
his strength, and his wondrous deeds that he has done.
5
For he established a covenant in Jacob,
and appointed a teaching in Israel,
which he commanded our fathers,
that they should make them known to their children;

** Lyrics – Psalm 78: The Faithful Shepherd and the Wandering Flock
[Verse 1]
I heard the stories from days of old,
Truth passed down, worth more than gold.
The hand of God split the sea wide,
But His people walked away with pride.
"He led them with a cloud by day, and all night with a fire’s light." (Oh, He led 'em through the night)
Yet still, they doubted, still, they strayed,
Forgetting the wonders His hands had made.
[Chorus]
Oh, the faithful Shepherd, but the flock went blind,
Mercy kept callin’, but they left Him behind.
He gave them water from the rock so deep,
Yet they turned away—(oh, the Shepherd still weeps).
[Verse 2]
Bread of heaven rained from the sky,
Angel’s food, yet they asked, "Can God provide?"
Meat like dust, it filled the land,
But their hearts were stone, they turned again.
"They forgot His works, and the wonders He showed." (Oh, they turned away)
They saw His fire, yet they would not believe,
Oh, how they grieved the heart of the King.
[Bridge] [Slow & soulful]
He struck down Egypt, led His own free,
Like a shepherd with his flock, through the raging sea.
He gave them a home, but they carved their stone,
Built high places—turned from His throne.
"But He, being merciful, forgave their sin." (Oh, His mercy remains)
Still, He remembered, still, He led,
Though they were dust, His love never fled.
[Chorus]
Oh, the faithful Shepherd, but the flock went blind,
Mercy kept callin’, but they left Him behind.
He gave them water from the rock so deep,
Yet they turned away—(oh, the Shepherd still weeps).
[Verse 3] [Building up, passionate]
Then He chose a king, not proud nor tall,
A shepherd boy, who would heed His call.
David ruled with hands so true,
Led the flock like the Lord would do.
"So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands." (Oh, he led 'em right)
But still, the people, they lost their way,
Oh, my soul, don’t do the same today.
[Outro] [Quiet, reflective, echoing the theme]
So hear, my people, don’t close your ears,
Remember His ways through all your years.
The Shepherd still calls, His love won’t cease,
Turn back now—(He will give you peace).
